Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy is at it again—bold claims and red-tinted glasses in full swing.
This time, on talkSPORT, Murphy suggested that if Liverpool manage to land Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, the title race next season might as well be called off already.
“I think so, [Liverpool favourites to win Premier League next year], I think you become favourites once you’ve won it, don’t you?” Murphy mused.
I know some of them aren’t over the line yet, the big thing is who comes in and who goes out.
Let’s say, I’m hypothesising here, it probably won’t happen, but there has been some news, hasn’t there, about Isak possibly going to Liverpool as well.
I know that sounds a bit ‘wow’ but could you imagine, and then all of a sudden there’s not a conversation, of course Liverpool are favourites then.”
Sure, Murphy admits he’s “hypothesising,” but the chatter around Isak isn’t exactly fiction.

And with Darwin Nunez reportedly inching closer to an exit and Luis Diaz flirting with the idea of sunnier climates in Spain, Liverpool’s forward line may soon need fresh blood—preferably the kind that scores regularly and doesn’t drift offside every five minutes.
Murphy’s excitement isn’t unfounded.
Isak was a standout performer for Newcastle again last season, combining pace, finesse, and positional intelligence with double-digit goals to his name.
Liverpool, fresh off an unexpected Premier League triumph in Arne Slot’s debut campaign, are now setting their sights on consolidation and evolution.
The Reds have already wrapped up the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, with Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz expected to follow soon.
But if Liverpool were to pull off a coup like Isak—Premier League-proven, 24, and already terrorising defences—it would be hard not to take Murphy’s “game over” vibes a bit seriously.
Until then, fans will keep refreshing their transfer feeds, and Danny Murphy will keep dreaming out loud—perhaps with a cheeky grin and an imaginary Isak shirt tucked under his arm.
